Q. What is CA HIPS?

A: CA Host-Based Intrusion Prevention System (CA HIPS) blends stand-alone firewall and intrusion detection and prevention capabilities to provide centralized proactive threat protection to counter online threats. This combination offers superior security, access control, policy enforcement, easy intrusion prevention management and deployment from a central location via a single, intuitive console to enhance your endpoint protection. With CA HIPS, organizations can:
  • Determine what traffic is appropriate
  • Determine what applications can communicate
  • Determine what behaviors and access rights on individual systems will be allowed or blocked
  • Log all relevant events to help with compliance, reporting and investigations

Q. What are the main features and benefits of CA HIPS?

A:The main features and benefits include:
  • Behavior-based Real-time Protection from Known and Unknown Threats.System administrators can use key functionality within CA HIPS to learn system behavior and then create or edit existing policies to detect anomalies based on behavior and prevent potentially malicious activity.
  • Enterprise-focused Threat Management Solution. IT professionals and network administrators can now protect against security breaches and ensure service continuity by determining what traffic is appropriate, what applications can communicate and even what behaviors and access rights on individual systems will be allowed or blocked.
  • Centralized Policy Management. CA HIPS offers excellent centrally-managed policy creation, deployment and maintenance to make ongoing administration of security policy across the enterprise easy and flexible.

Q. I have anti-virus and anti-spyware software running now, why should I buy CA HIPS?

A:Enterprises need stand-alone firewalls; intrusion detection and prevention products to maintain the integrity of their organization’s machines. CA HIPS ensures that the devices granted network access meet corporate security policy. It takes multiple layers of defense to protect against today’s wide variety of attacks and threats. One product or technique cannot protect against every possible threat, therefore requiring different products for different threats. A combination of products provides the most complete defense. Adding CA HIPS to your endpoint threat defenses will help you prevent known and unknown threats such as malware, spyware, adware and rogue software from penetrating your network. When combined with CA Anti-Spyware and CA Anti-Virus, you get the added features of being able to remove threats that happen to evade detection or that previously infected the endpoint. Together, they offer comprehensive endpoint protection against threats.

Q. Why should I buy CA HIPS when a Network Intrusion Prevention System (NIPS) appliance is cheaper?

A: If you can choose only one technology for intrusion prevention, choose CA HIPS. Host-based intrusion prevention is more effective at blocking and containing intrusions and infections at the individual workstation level versus a NIPS system that operates at the network level. CA HIPS allows the system administrator to use Learning Mode to understand the behavior of the systems and the individuals and groups within the environment. With CA HIPS, the system administrator can create and deploy rules that address the unique business requirements of these groups. This provides a level of protection that supports how the group works and at the same time provides the granularity the system administrator needs to protect the whole IT environment. NIPS does not focus on the endpoints, where there is a high risk of threat infection. However, many security professionals consider NIPS and HIPS technologies to be complementary. If you have already purchased a NIPS appliance, or have the budget to install both technologies, you can enhance your protection even further by employing both NIPS and HIPS in your environment. Will CA HIPS work with my existing anti-virus and antispyware products?

A:CA HIPS is designed to work together with CA’s portfolio of threat products to offer maximum endpoint threat protection. It is also designed to complement other vendor’s anti-spyware and anti-virus products. Adding CA HIPS to your existing threat defenses will help prevent known and unknown threats, such as malware, spyware and rogue software, from penetrating your network. A combination of products working together is needed to protect network-enabled workstations and mobile devices from network-based attacks.

Q. What languages are available?
